Craig’s Writings

Writing isn’t really my favorite thing to do, but I’ve had the occasional opportunity and inspiration to write blogs and articles, both personal and professional, throughout the years. In this section, I share the latest entries to my growing collections of writings. I hope you enjoy reading them at least as much as I enjoyed writing them.

Herman, Week 6 Back

Chutes, sprouts, and microscopic insects. Who could ask for more?

Herman, Week 6 Front

At this point, the moss chutes are the most notable growth characteristic of Herman. Most of the other plant life seems to have withered away. Still wondering about the white specks and the teeny insects.

Craig’s Spaghetti or Lasagna Sauce

We had lots of ham this Easter, so I was in a mood for something far from Easter fare. In this case, a red sauce and pasta. I based my recipe on Kay’s Spaghetti and Lasagna Sauce from AllRecipes.com. I used my heavy cast iron dutch oven to prepare the sauce and opted to use medium shells as my pasta. The original recipe called for 40 minutes of simmering time, but I let mine simmer for over an hour. I served the pasta dish with thinly sliced roasted garlic ciabatta bread (a salad would also make an excellent accompaniment, if...

Herman, Week 5 Back

Moss chutes everywhere back here! The sprout is still going strong. A couple more white spots, too.

Herman, Week 5 Front

Finally turned off the flash! Lots of growth going on now, especially the moss. Lots of chutes sticking up everywhere. My favorite sprout is long gone, withered into nothingness. Curiously, there are a few specks of white here and there, could this be mold? Also, there are definitely itty-bitty insects crawling around under the lid. No idea what they are.

Herman, Week 4 Back

Hm, some minor developments visible back here. There’s definitely growth of the moss, at last! Also, the sprout is going strong. I added water and observed some very small insects crawling around the bottom of the lid (too small for me to identify). I’ve got to do something about the flash glare.

Herman, Week 4 Front

I’m still working on trying to make these pictures easier to see. This week, I placed Herman on a pedestal to try for better light. (The pedestal is a Brookfield Square Note box in a pattern called Unity.) My poor sprout is just barely visible as a stunted, withered thing sticking up in the upper right of the terrarium. The light green growth to the right is also fading. Is there going to be a changing of the guard inside the terrarium?

Herman, Week 3 Back

The sprout on the back side is still going strong (although it’s leaves are hidden by the flash glare). I’ve noticed a couple other white bits and perhaps just a little growth of the moss itself (you can see some green chutes to the far left near the top of the terrarium.

Herman, Week 3 Front

Poor, poor sprout! See the withered thing near the upper right of the terrarium? The sprout suddenly lost one leaf, then the other, and now the stem is curling up. That’s sad, because I liked looking at the sprout (and visualizing it on a sandwich).

Herman, Week 2 Back

That sprout on the back side is going strong. Still some whitish bits in there, too. So far, not much noticeable growth on the moss itself. I noticed a fruit fly inside, sadly flying in circles. I let it out.
